Self Branding

Current Logo

I have finished my FdA Graphic's course and have started to get involved with various projects. Still difficult getting studio work as to the style of my work but I will prevail. I have become more involved on social media to create a larger client base for my freelance work. I created the logo above as it was simple and recognisable. Having such a ridiculously long name doesn't help but it makes me unique.

GQ Investigation

I wanted to look at the differences in design of two editions of GQ over a year. To understand how current design trends filter through into publications. My aim was to analyse the magazine down to it's layout, content ratio to advertising, brands advertising and so on. For the investigation I used the April Edition in 2011 and 2012.

To represent my findings I represented the statistic's in the style of the magazine. Using the dominant colours, typefaces and graphic navigation.

The difference in style and layout is clear. April 2012 has uses white space more effectively than 2011. The statistics are quite extraordinary. Both magazines have over 40% of advertising in comparison to content. So the reader is paying for adverts more than content.

Design Museum - Terence Conran

Went to the Design Museum today to see the Terence Conran exhibition, I was actually amazed at how much he has accomplished in design. Especially the range of design fields that he has covered. It's very inspiring to think that you don't have to restrict yourself to a particular aspect of design. I would recommend the visit highly. It's on until the 4th of March alongside 'This Is Design.' An exploration into symbolic and recognisable design that has pushed the boundaries.

My latest design for Ash Catch'em, a West London rapper. I try to make bespoke piece's as personal as possible. Everything I have included refers to Ash's interests and things that he is known for; Dragon Stout's to Trapstar. My designs are becoming more complicated with experience, from afar the design appears simple but when up close you can see all the tiny details. Hopefully Ash will play the ukulele in his upcoming gigs.

Another present for a friend. At the moment my preferred style of work is black fine liner on parcel paper. I wanted to play around with type that best reflected Morgan's personality. Sophisticated but also destined to have her names in lights. And then I made it more personal with the other typefaces. I'm very pleased to say she liked it.

Present For A Friend

A very belated present for my friend, Frankie (dylanmarie.tumblr.com) I wanted to design something that she would be proud to have on her desk. She is very particular, so I thought simplicity would be best. We both intend to move to New York.

Jamal Edwards Birthday Canvas - Cont.

I finally decided on a design or what I thought I wanted it to look like. Once I start adding or changing, I have to stop myself from going over board and ruining the design. Simple in collage pieces really isn't my strong point. This is what I designed roughly on A4 and then once I scaled it up to the canvas size I knew I would add more.

Initial Design - Rough

Enlarged with some adjustments

Finished On Canvas

I am so pleased with what I created. I think the diamante studs give the design that edge. It really makes it stand out once on a wall. A good friend of Jamal's Jordan Fish also got a canvas for his 21st birthday, however the calibre of the artist eclipses my effort. Kid Zoom has only done two custom pieces - for Chris Brown and Kanye West. Now Jamal Edwards (SBTV.) It is an honour to have my work so close to his.

Just Getting Started

Jamal Edwards Birthday Canvas

I wanted to design a piece of work for my good friend, and I really enjoy creating work for people I know. It gives the work that personal edge and also gives me a great desire to make it as unique. My style tends to be a combination of illustration, collage and inspiration from street design. I listed all the things that he likes but also what he is to make it only for him.

Jamal's love is skull rings, skull scarves, skull t-shirts - everything skulls so that had to be integral to the design and then i just listed everything i wanted to include and it snowballed. I really wanted to create a similar design to the Marilyn Monroe, however my timescale for the design and execution was limited so decided to use a skull rather than work from Jamal's face. If i got it wrong it could have looked like a child's portrait.

My friend Frank is the coolest person I know, and these are my favourite images from her blog.

A similar photograph to one I created with my shirt collection a while back.

The quality of this photograph and the idea is beautiful.

Witty and so true...
